All manufacturers strive to achieve high performance levels with the larger trucks, this is partially achieved by the use of a three-speed transmission system, and a high performance engine is also employed to the full, resulting in major increases in travel speeds, gradeability and acceleration. Engine power enables the fitting of an extra performance tandem hydraulic pump this achieves faster lifting speeds.

Electrically controlled forward/reverse levers operate at the touch of a finger and the operator can easily shift from first to second and third gear without removing his hands from the steering wheel. Automatic transmission is available as optional from most manufacturers.

Specially designed, oversized floor pedals are angled to improve ease of operation and reduce fatigue without compromising safety. Roller mounting on the accelerator pedal accurately transmits foot movement, ensuring better low-speed control.

Most meter panels are easy to read through adjustable steering wheels, enabling the operator to confirm operating conditions quickly: safety and with high productivity.

Generally the operator's cabin is very large and with sound insulation, the steering wheels tend to be of small diameter to give light movement and sharp responses.
